'Comedian' Dane Cook Talks Marketing

He Doesn't Like the Poster for His New Movie

Dane Cook -- who has somehow managed to become a gajillion-dollar-earning comedian despite the fact that watching his stand-up routine is like watching your not-so-bright cousin "perform" at the family reunion -- is upset with some of the marketing behind the upcoming movie "My Best Friend's Girl." In particular, he doesn't like the poster.

But Cook wants us all to know something prior to his poster slagging: "Before the downpour let me just say that my new movie, 'My Best Friends Girl,' is the best / funniest film I've done yet." (Which is like saying last Friday's MRI was the most hilarious I ever had!) He continues: "That being said, let me address the fact that although I'm not a marketing major, I have a bit of a trusted reputation after 18 years self promoting. I'd like to inform you I had no say in this marketing campaign, but if I did, things would be different since it is obvious that this poster is boring / odd and has zero to do with the movie I performed in."

Cook then goes on to offer a point-by-point look at what's wrong with the poster. Here's the interesting thing: While his jokes are painfully lame -- "My left side looks like Brittany [sic] Spears' vagina" -- his case is pretty solid. That's one piss-poor movie poster right there. Maybe Cook should be offering advice on marketing. His grammar is only slightly better than his jokes, but he offers more practical, helpful advice than supposed gurus like Seth Godin.

Gonna go out on a limb here and guess Cook's post is funnier than the movie. And neither is funnier than the poster, which isn't funny at all. But he's still smart enough—and probably overqualified—to land a suit job on Madison Avenue.

Still talking about Brittney Spears huh? Maybe she should do a book about the long tail. But it would probably be a picture book.

Wow, I jsut read his blog (boring) and watched the trailer, and he's got a point. The wrapper does NOT reflect what's inside the package. I can just imagine a bunch of prissy hallmark women thinking this is a romantic movie, then walking out in horror at the crude jokes and language. I guess if you're heard his routine before you would have an idea of his rude style, but I've never heard of him and I thought this was just a dumb chick flick. Turns out it's a dumb dooood flick. Hollywood should be plowed into the ocean.

I don't know that I appreciate your harsh criticism of Dane Cook. I do know that I have laughed 'til my sides hurt when seeing him perform. Granted, his jokes are extremely rude and most of the time completely uncalled for--but that is what makes his comedy so brilliant. He doesn't do drugs or drink (self-proclaimed, because he is afraid he would become too good at either), he is just vulgar. Sometimes we can use a little bit of ridiculousness in our lives. It allows us to stop pretending like a bunch of British Lords, boring and stale.

I'm with Ken Wheaton. Dave Cook is about as funny as a toothache. He's a bonehead, and I worry about anyone who finds him remotely funny.

Also, this? "It allows us to stop pretending like a bunch of British Lords, boring and stale." Is the weirdest and most random thing I've read in a long time. When is the last time you were around British Lords? What? Still, it made me laugh more than Dane Cook ever will.

Note: None of the links below are remotely safe for work.
Jonathan,
I have no problem with rude or vulgar humor. You want rude and vulgar, go pick up some old Eddie Murphy tapes before he became a family guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZb2H4AK1po or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7nNLotYdOE). Or Chris Rock. Or the recently departed George Carlin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeSSwKffj9o). Or the recently departed Bernie Mac. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4FOJFLJVlQ) Or George Lopez (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I0K_v_pfNM). Or even Ron "Tater Salad" White from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYOxza2ZWw0). My problem isn't that Cook is rude or vulgar, it's that he's just not funny.

Note: If anyone defends Carlos Mencia in this space, I might have to comment you from Ad Age comments for all eternity.

Cook needs to focus on scripts, not posters.

I guess my thought regarding his not being funny is a two part answer...1) it is merely an opinion one way or the other; 2) A whole lot of people disagree as evidenced by his insane popularity and record record sales.

"My problem isn't that Cook is rude or vulgar, it's that he's just not funny."

Precisely.

I also strongly suggest you check out Eddie Izzard and Billy Connolly. Both have brilliant minds and are so much funnier than Dane Cook could ever dream of being.

Come on, Marketing and Ad guys you should know better than anyone about target markets. I dont think that the older biz guy is who Dane Cook is trying to appeal to. Seriously though, the man is hilarious!
