New York's Museum of Sex is open (see Buzz, July/August 2002), and the book accompanying the inaugural exhibition - NYC Sex: How New York Transformed Sex in America, a $25 trade paperback from Scala Publishers - is must reading for all creatives. After all, advertising is all about sex, isn't it? There are even ads in the book, like the one seen here. In fact, there are more than 150 color illustrations, including 19th century drawings, film stills, fine art, street photography and images from the collection of the Kinsey Institute. Not to mention text, including an essay called "Sodom on the Hudson," and discussions between cultural historians and pop culture "icons" (including Vanessa del Rio and Annie Sprinkle) on the topics of "Queers," "Whores," "Underground" and "Porn." No, the book does not come in a plain brown wrapper.
