Production Index

The ripples of September 11 continued through October in the commercials production industry, as the Creativity Production Index - the average number of spots produced by a sample of agency offices - fell slightly to its second record low in as many months. Data from the Los Angeles Film Office, meanwhile, shows that the number of production days remained flat there from September to October, still up over the strike days of a year ago but off 20 percent from August. Many production and post houses are certainly teetering on the brink - as the collapse of Propaganda Films adequately demonstrated. And while some producers project better numbers for both November and December - a return, perhaps, to the encouraging workflow of August - the conventional wisdom says that at-risk companies will need to find a way to still be around on New Year's Day, when advertisers are expected to return to business as usual, or as close as the troubled economy will allow.
