The trend of creatives crossing over into directing continues with the recent signing of the shooting collective known as Happy to the Villains satellite called Smuggler. The group - which consists of Cliff Freeman art director Guy Shelmerdine, editor Lucas Spaulding of Mackenzie Cutler and Mindfield executive producer Richard Farmer - made a splash this year at the International Advertising Festival in Cannes, where their graphic anti-smoking spot, "Lung," was featured in the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase.

New York post house Nice Shoes has announced the opening of Guava, a new effects and design boutique. Visual effects artist Amber Wilson, formerly of New York's Liquid Light, has joined the new venture, as have effects artists Tim Crean, Greg Cutler and Mark Wilhelm, all formerly of Nice Shoes.

Phoenix Editorial, San Francisco, has launched a design and effects division called Bonfire. The new venture will be headed by director of effects and design Matt Silverman and senior producer Jonathan Hinman.

Design and effects house Click 3x recently christened Click 3xi, an interactive division head by Franco Fiore, founder and former creative director of Siegel & Gale Interactive.

Los Angeles editorial house The Cutting Room has launched Room, a production and design company headed by executive creative director Flavio (Kampah) Campagna.

Flame artist Andy Milkis, whose resume includes stints at Black Logic and Splash Design, has launched TLI Design & Visual Effects, a boutique venture that will operate in partnership with New York's Creative Bubble.

Santa Monica's Colorado FX and Boston's Brickyard VFX have entered into a strategic alliance designed to give both companies a bicoastal presence. Colorado has also hired producer Tami Goldsmith, formerly of Digital Domain. She joins five other Digital Domain alums who have recently moved to Colorado FX, including effects supervisors Paul Hirsch and Oliver Hotz.
