[new york] Ammirati Puris Lintas is moving Max Gosling, chairman-CEO of the Asia/Pacific zone, to worldwide president, succeeding the retired Spencer Plavoukos. The move will set off a chain of changes with its zone chairmen in the coming weeks, according to executives close to the company. Also at Ammirati, Peter Leinroth was promoted to exec VP-managing director from senior VP-group director, account services.

[los angeles] Fox Sports, a division of the Fox Television Network, has awarded its estimated $20 million account to Foote, Cone & Belding, San Francisco, industry executives said. Fox Sports last fall parted with agency of record Seiniger Advertising, Beverly Hills, Calif., which handled a variety of advertising, including National Football League programming. Tool of North America, Santa Monica, had handled Fox Sports' Major League Baseball ads.

[stamford, conn.] GTE Corp. is quietly talking with Ogilvy & Mather, New York, about its $80 million account, said agency executives close to GTE. O&M already has a telecommunications client, Nynex Corp., but the future of that account is uncertain because of the merger between Bell Atlantic and Nynex. Bell Atlantic's lead agency is Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising, New York. An O&M spokeswoman said, "We are not involved in the pitch," and called the idea of quiet talks "speculation." GTE declined to comment. Other agencies pitching GTE include Campbell Mithun Esty, Minneapolis; Wells Rich Greene BDDP, New York; and incumbent Focus GTE, Dallas, a DDB Needham Worldwide unit.

[detroit] General Motors Corp. has narrowed its review for a $20 million to $25 million used-car campaign to N.W. Ayer & Partners, New York, and Campbell Mithun Esty. An insider confirmed a cut to two. However, neither of the other finalists-TL Partnership, Dallas, and Mullen, Wenham, Mass.-has been officially eliminated.

[milwaukee] The first new TV campaign for Miller Lite by Fallon McElligott, Minneapolis, debuted last weekend during the NFL playoffs and Fox's "The X-Files." The four new 60-second ads, which resurrect the "Miller time" theme of Miller High Life, feature a slick-talking ad man named Dick.

[new york] Peter Jones, president of Omnicom Group's Diversified Agency Services division, plans to retire by Jan. 31. No successor has been named. Mr. Jones, 53, and Omnicom CEO John Wren have markedly different styles and have worked uneasily together.

[vienna, va.] U2 is close to signing a sponsor for its upcoming world tour, with America Online in the lead for the $12 million deal. Such a foray into entertainment marketing would be unprecedented in the online industry. Apple Computer, IBM and Microsoft were also reported to be talking to the band.

[rotterdam] Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Cos. is moving its $80 million to $100 million European account to J. Walter Thompson Co., making WPP Group's JWT and Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide networks the two worldwide agencies for the Anglo-Dutch oil company. JWT already handled about 25% of Shell's European business and most of the rest was split between O&M and Publicis, also in the review.

[cincinnati] Executives at Procter & Gamble Co. have recommended an agency to handle its $250 million print buying account, but a final decision isn't expected until later this week, said a spokeswoman. Incumbent Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising, New York, is considered the front-runner; all P&G roster shops pitched for the business before Christmas.

[beaverton, ore.] Nike last week confirmed significant changes are being made to its Nike Sports Management division. Details are forthcoming, but it appears Nike is getting out of the athlete representation business, which it got into in part to direct how Nike athletes are marketed by others.

PepsiCo divisions will use a common theme line to link the separate promotions in support of the upcoming "Star Wars" trilogy re-release. "Join the celebration.
