Print Media Hits Bottom of Obama Tank, Keeps Digging

ASME Adds Obama Category to Annual Cover Contest

By Published on .

We thought we were being a little bratty last year when we ran a list of "Hagiographic Cover Treatments of Obama" along with "10 Covers We Loved" for 2008.

But maybe we were not just bratty but onto something. Because this year the American Society of Magazine Editors has expanded its annual cover contest to include a whole category for covers featuring Barack Obama.

The 2009 categories are: best Obama cover; best news and business cover; best entertainment and celebrity cover; best sports and fitness cover; best fashion and beauty cover; best house and home cover; best lifestyle cover; most delicious cover; sexiest cover; and best science, technology and nature cover. In another new development this year, voters on Amazon will select winners from finalists chosen by industry pros. Voters will then pick a Cover of the Year from the winner's circle. Eligible covers are dated June 2008 through May 2009.

Last year, the categories were celebrity, concept, fashion, leisure interest, news, service and online. Cover of the Year went to a New York cover, not hagiographic in any way, featuring Eliot Spitzer.
