Gordon Gekko Is FBI's Newest Spokesperson

Never Mind, Says Michael Dougla, Greed Isn't All That Good After All

In case you had any doubts, the movie "Wall Street " was fiction.

That's the message of a public-service announcement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation featuring Michael Douglas, the star of the 1987 film. In the movie, Douglas, playing financial titan Gordon Gekko, famously said "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good."

In the PSA, Douglas reprises his role as Gekko but changes his tune, saying that while the movie was make-believe, crime on Wall Street is all too real.

The ad will be broadcast on select TV stations, FBI Special Agent David Chaves told Bloomberg. Mr. Chaves said he reached out to the actor because the Gekko character is still admired on Wall Street .

But do financial-services professionals really take their insider trading cues from an '80s flick? We doubt it. That, plus the spot's laughably bad production value, puts this project firmly in the realm of "What were they thinking?"
