So, what are you going to be for Halloween?
If your answer is a witch, you're pretty boring. But you'll have plenty of company, with some 5 million adult Americans planning to don a pointed black hat this year. Nearly 60 million adults plan to dress up this Halloween, spending more than $2 billion on costumes for themselves, their children and, yes, their pets. All told, Americans are expected to spend $5.8 billion, or about $66 per person, on Halloween celebrations, according to a study from the National Retail Federation and BigResearch. Plenty plan to get more creative than a witch, however, turning to movies, TV, pop culture and even commercials for inspiration.
There will be Snookis galore -- we couldn't fathom calling the "Jersey Shore" crew actual celebrities, so they're categorized as TV characters here -- as well as more than a few Lady Gagas and M&Ms. But there will also be the odd Pam from "The Office" and Joan Harris from "Mad Men." Even "Mayhem" from the recent Allstate commercials was written in as a costume choice. Which begs the question, what about Flo from the Progressive spots, Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man in the World or The Man Your Man Could Smell Like? While they didn't turn up in this survey, we're sure some ad guy or gal has plans for a stellar costume.
