FIVE AGENCIES NAMED IN CAPITAL ONE REVIEW

Pitches for $145 Million Account Expected Next Month

SAN FRANCISCO (AdAge.com) -- Capital One Bank has named five semifinalists in the review for its $145 million advertising account, according to the consultant handling the pitch.

The contenders are Publicis Groupe's Kaplan Thaler Group, New York, which is currently handling advertising during the review; Interpublic Group of Cos. shops Martin Agency, Richmond, Va. and McCann-Erickson Worldwide, New York; Omnicom Group's Element 79 Partners, Chicago; and Grey Global Group's Grey Worldwide, New York.

Bob Wolf, co-CEO and managing partner of Bob Wolf Partners/TPG, Los Angeles, said Capital One is visiting with the agencies. The group will be cut further, with pitches expected in Februray and a decision scheduled for April.

The account previously was at Publicis' D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, but went into review when Publicis decided to close down the agency.

In 2001, Capital One, based in Falls Church, Va., spent $145 million in measured media in the U.S., according to Taylor Nelson Sofres' CMR.
