David Grabski, marketing and operations manager for the automaker's Western region, said he could neither confirm nor deny BMW had picked and was negotiating with a winner. He said he expected an announcement to come in the next 48 hours.

Other finalists in the creative pitch were independent Heil-Brice Advertising, Newport Beach, Calif.; Publicis Groupe's Publicis & Hal Riney, San Francisco, and 11-year incumbent Mendelsohn/Zien, Los Angeles, which is minority-owned by Hakuhodo.

Another independent, Secret Weapon Marketing, Santa Monica, dropped out Nov. 25.
