Incumbent Kaplan Thaler Group Advances

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Capital One has trimmed the contenders list in its $145 million advertising review to four agencies.

Advancing in the review process are: Publicis Groupe's  Kaplan Thaler Group, New York, the incumbent, which is pitching with Publicis UK, London; Omnicom's Element 79 Partners, Chicago, with sibling Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, London; Interpublic Group of Cos.' McCann-Erickson Worldwide, New York and London; and independent Faulds Advertising, London, which is pitching alone.

A decision is expected in the spring.

Consultancy Bob Wolf/TPG, Los Angeles, is handling the search.

The banking company -- one of the largest credit card issuers in the U.S. -- launched the review late last year. The account previously was at Publicis' D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, but went into review when Publicis decided to close down the agency following the acquisition of D'Arcy's parent, Bcom3 Group.

In 2001, Capital One, based in Falls Church, Va., spent $145 million in measured media in the U.S., according to Taylor Nelson Sofres' CMR.
