Mr. McCabe most recently served as exec VP-head of planning at Publicis Groupe's Leo Burnett, Chicago, working on accounts including Altoids and Allstate. He has also held planning roles at Omnicom Group's TBWA/Chiat/Day, New York and Fallon McElligott, Minneapolis.
The appointment comes after a year-long search to replace the agency's former partner-director of planning, Jeffrey Wolf, who left last fall.
Mr. McCabe will manage strategic planning staff and the output of customer research, among other things.
"He has a fresh, open mind, and the experience -- so that's what made him the perfect candidate," Deutsch New York President Val DiFebo said of Mr. McCabe, noting that the hire was instrumental in completing the office's reorganization.
For Mr. McCabe, moving to Deutsch's more forward-thinking culture after a five-year stint as chief strategy officer at industry stalwart Burnett was a no-brainer.
"Everybody's talking about new models, but the thing about Deutsch is it's always been integrated," Mr. McCabe said. "They don't need to reinvent their model, they just need to re-assert the models that already exist."
