Separate reviews
The home furnishings retailer conducted separate reviews, one for creative, one for media. In the creative competition, Deutsch beat independents Laird & Partners, New York, and Loomis Agency, Dallas; Publicis Groupe's Fallon, New York, and Publicis & Hal Riney, San Francisco. Media contenders included WPP Group's MindShare and Interpublic's Initiative, both in New York.

Deutsch's last experience in the home furnishings category was in 2000, when its 11-year relationship with Swedish furniture retailer Ikea ended.

Pier 1 spent $55 million in measured media in 2003, according to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR.

Pier 1's previous agency, Interpublic's Campbell-Ewald, Warren, Mich., did not participate in the review.
