DHL Grounded in U.S., Madison Avenue

Delivery Giant's $40M Domestic Account at Ogilvy Said to Be Stalled Since the Spring

NEW YORK ( -- Today's news that package delivery giant DHL will slash nearly 10,000 jobs and do away with all its U.S. air and ground services due to the sagging economy means another account has dried up on Madison Avenue.

WPP Group's Ogilvy & Mather is agency of record for DHL around the world.

According to executives familiar with the matter, though, the domestic account has been dormant since April. Still, the company's troubles come as blow to the ad agency, as DHL, which is owned by Germany's Deutsche Post World Net, had spent nearly $40 million on U.S. measured media last year, according to TNS Media Intelligence data.

On the flipside, it could be a boon to competitors UPS and FedEx, whose accounts are handled by Interpublic Group of Cos.' Martin Agency and Omnicom Group's BBDO Worldwide.
