Moves Comes as Goodby Silverstein Resigns Account

NEW YORK ( -- Discover Card is conducting a search for a new ad agency, following Goodby Silverstein & Partners’ decision to resign the business.
The credit-card company said Goodby Silverstein had a conflict with another potential client. The agency would not comment.

“Goodby decided to pursue another business opportunity that would pose a conflict,” said a spokeswoman for the Morgan Stanley-owned Discover Financial Services, which markets the Discover Card.

That business opportunity is believed to be Visa USA. Goodby, part of the Omnicom Group, has been pitching for project work against two sibling agencies: BBDO, New York, Visa’s agency of record, and TBWA/Chiat/Day, Playa del Rey, Calif. A decision on the undisclosed assignment is expected within the next few days, according to executives familiar with the situation.

A Goodby executive declined to comment.

Discover spent about $80 million in measured media last year, according to TNS Media Intelligence. The spokeswoman did not immediately know when the review would be concluded or whether a consultant had been hired.

Parent Morgan Stanley recently named WPP Group’s Ogilvy & Mather its agency of record. Ogilvy also works for American Express.
