Joy Schwartz, North American president of performance marketing at Havas, is leaving the agency network to open the new Chicago outpost of independent shop Barrie, D'Rozario DiLorenzo. Havas will search for a successor in the performance marketing role, according to people familiar with the matter.
Ms. Schwartz, who will join BDD in September, declined to comment and referred calls to Havas. A Havas spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.
BDD has also been expanding its top ranks, recruiting former Olson CEO Kevin DiLorenzo as president and partner in January. Ms. Schwartz will round out the leadership team as partner and managing director. CEO-Chief Creative Officer Stuart D'Rozario and Executive Creative Director Bob Barrie continue as partners.
Ms. Schwartz comes to BDD after 12 years at Havas. Before her role as North American president of performance marketing, which she took in late May, she had been co-president of the Chicago office since 2009. In her performance marketing role, she was responsible for building the discipline at the agency and finding new areas of growth and innovation in direct marketing and related areas, according to a release at the time.
"For seven years we've been a Minneapolis agency," said Mr. D'Rozario. "Our next phase is to have a national footprint. We want to be seen as geographically neutral agency."
The headcount at BDD is still relatively small, with 25 people in Minneapolis, but Mr. D'Rozario said the agency is in the midst of hiring people for Chicago and San Francisco, with a couple senior leadership roles expected to be filled in the next month or so. The agency's model is to have fewer, but more senior, employees, he added. Recent new-business wins include Rosetta Stone, UnitedHealth Group, Kemps Frozen Yogurt, Tropicana Atlantic City's online casino and Lunds & Byerlys.
Of Ms. Schwartz, Mr. D'Rozario said: "She can help us build business in Chicago, but her role will also be functioning across other offices. She has a great track record of being a leader, building relationships and brands and she'll be a great asset to the agency."
