Gas Stations to Be Converted to Shell

DETROIT (AdAge.com) -- J. Walter Thompson, Houston, was awarded the exclusive rights to advertise all Texaco's 12,700 U.S. gas stations through June 2004.

The estimated $20 million win comes after the federal government mandated that Texaco divest its interests in a joint venture with Shell Oil Co.

The WPP Group agency also handles Shell. A spokeswoman for the venture said it expects to convert most of the Texaco stations to Shell.

Chevron Corp. acquired Texaco Oct. 9 to form ChevronTexaco.
