NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- After a review of agencies owned by holding company Publicis Groupe, financial services marketer Capital One has selected Kaplan Thaler Group, New York, as its agency to handle advertising over the next few months, according to executives with knowledge of the matter.

Kaplan Thaler will be assisted by sibling agency Publicis Worldwide in the U.S. and U.K.

In the first quarter of 2003, Capital One, assisted by review consultancy Bob Wolf Partners/TPG, Los Angeles, will launch a full-fledged review between Kaplan Thaler Group and eight other agencies, according to another executive.

Those agencies include Interpublic Group of Cos.' Martin Agency, Richmond, Va.; Omnicom Group's DDB Worldwide and Merkely Newman Harty, both New York; WPP Group's Berlin Cameron/Red Cell and J. Walter Thompson, both New York.

Mr. Wolf referred calls to Capital One.

A Capital One spokeswoman would not confirm the names of the individual shops, but classified the review as a "short list, invitation-only process" that would take place during the first quarter of 2003.

In 2001, Capital One, based in Falls Church, Va., spent $145 million in measured media in the U.S., according to Taylor Nelson Sofres' CMR.
