McGarryBowen has taken the U.S. by storm, is trying to make a go of it in Europe -- and now is setting its sights on a presence in Asia.
As part of its plan to grow McGarryBowen into a network, the agency has recruited Jane Barratt to join the shop's executive team and serve as chief operations officer-international, the shop's executives said during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity , which kicked off in earnest today.
Ms. Barratt most recently served as president of the New York office of WPP's Y&R, where she exited last summer amid a series of leadership changes under Global CEO David Sable. Before that . she spent time at SapientNitro and in Asia for Havas' EuroRSCG. Given where her international experience is focused and the fact that McGarryBowen is owned by Japanese giant Dentsu, the next logical move for the shop seemed Asia.
New York-based McGarryBowen was founded in 2002, bought by Dentsu in 2008 and its first move outside of the U.S. was to London in 2010. Dentsu is betting big on the shop, as evidenced by its move earlier this year to shed the Japanese company's name on its European agency operations and rebrand them McGarryBowen.
"With our European offering now launched in McGarryBowen London and Dusseldorf, the next step in our global expansion is Asia," Gordon Bowen, chairman-chief creative officer, told Ad Age in a statement. "We have big plans there, which we'll be sharing soon. Jane's deep experience in this very important market will be a huge asset for both the network and our clients, whom continue to seek our help in Asia."
"McGarryBowen has built a wonderful business based on the fundamentals of 'work that works' and relentless client centricity," said Ms. Barratt in a statement. "Now more than ever, these are needed on a global scale, and I'm thrilled to be a part of the expansion." She'll report to Stewart Owen, the agency's president of global business, who noted: "In an industry that is developing fewer and fewer true globalists Jane is the real deal -- equally at home in Shanghai, Berlin and Sao Paulo."
Ms. Barratt's official duties begin during the Cannes ad festival, where she's attending a party McGarryBowen is hosting featuring "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm.
