After 17 years in the city that's known for the Liberty Bell and cheesesteaks, Red Tettemer is going Hollywood or bust.
The agency -- which has about 70 staffers and counts UnderArmour and Century21 as clients -- is rebranding and opening its first new outpost in Venice, California.
Effective August 1, it will be renamed Red Tettemer O'Connell + Partners. It means that Steve O'Connell, who's an executive creative director and partner at the shop, gets his name on the door. He joined in 2010 when Red Tettemer acquired O'Connell's and Jared Scott's Philly-based shop Stick and Move. Carla Mote and Jared Scott will continue to lead accounts and business development at the agency.
"There's a lot going on on the west coast right now, we're out there for both production and business, and we felt like if we would plant our flag we'd grow that much faster," said Steve Red, president and chief creative officer.
He also notes they were drawn by the success the LA agency market is having these days, particularly with 72andSunny serving as an anchor and setting the tone. "They are doing exciting things and blowing up and that adds to a great vibe that's already happening," Mr. Red said.
72andSunny was named Ad Age's Agency of the Year in 2013. In addition other shops there are doing well and expanding, including Deutsch, Los Angeles, MDC Partners' CP&B and smaller agencies such as Omelet.
Said Mr. O'Connell: "There's a lot of good work coming out of the west coast. New shops are opening and the shops that are there are doing well. There's a higher level of people just bringing it. It has momentum versus other cities where there's nothing exciting happening."
RTO+P West will be located on Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice and plans to be open for business in about a month. Its looking to staff up immediately for creative, interactive and account posts.
The office will be led by Perry Morris, previously a senior account manager who's been promoted to managing director of RTO+P West. Earlier in her career, she held account positions at Goodby, Silverstein and Partners, Ignited and Crispin Porter + Bogusky.
The new office will service existing California-based accounts, including Fox Networks and the California Association of Realtors and is looking to chase new business there.
