Based in Little Rock, Ark., Alltel has about 12 million customers in 26 states and reported $8 billion in revenues. Alltel provides wireless, local telephone, long distance, Internet and high-speed data services to residential and business customers.

Observers considered DDB a front-runner for the business because of its work on Dell and Qwest Communications. DDB won the consolidated $100 million Qwest business in April 2002 but lost it four months later to runner-up Interpublic Group of Cos.' Foote, Cone & Belding.
