"Epic Split," Volvo Trucks' online film starring action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme performing a perfect split atop two backwards-moving Volvo Trucks, earned the "Best in Show" prize at the New York Festivals International Advertising Awards, held last night at the New York Public Library Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.
The online film, created out of Swedish independent agency Forsman & Bodenfors, is part of the brand's ongoing "Live Tests" B-to-B campaign that shows off various features of the brand's trucks via unusual stunts. The overall effort has had a strong start on the awards show circuit, and last month earned the best of show Black Cube award at the Art Directors Club awards in Miami.
Outside the Best of Show honor, "Epic Split" earned multiple accolades at the N.Y. Festivals, including two Grand Prize and four First Prize awards. The overall "Live Tests" campaign also earned a Grand Prize. The wins helped earn the Volvo Group the 2014 Brand of the Year honor.
Double Grand Prize honors also went to DDB DM9 JaymeSyfu Philippines, for the "Smart Txtbks" mobile campaign for Smart Communications, a campaign that earned last year's Cannes Lions Mobile Grand Prix.
Other notable winners included BBDO, which took 2014 Network of the Year and Bacon CPH Denmark, which won Production Company of the Year.
This year's competition saw entries from 67 countries. A 30-person executive jury comprising chief creative officers from around the world selected the winners after five rounds of judging from a shortlist determined by the 460-member Grand Jury. Ad Age and Crain Communications President and Editor-in-Chief Rance Crain also served as executive jury moderator.
