Dogs, it seems, are a woman's best friend too. Some 45.3 percent of all women own a dog or puppy, compared with 41 percent of men, according to a recent Maritz Poll. In fact, more than half of all Americans are pet owners; 67 percent of whom fall into the 35- to 54-year-old age group. And, surprisingly, slightly more men (26.2 percent) own cats or kittens than women (25.6 percent). Most of those surveyed agreed that animals and people make a purr-fect combination. Some 59 percent "agree completely" that families with children benefit from having a dog or a cat, while 61 percent feel that older adults benefit from having canines and felines as well.
