Reality bites! Those optimistic Gen Yers looking for a cushy job in management consulting were in for a little disappointment after their tassels were turned. In the May 1999 Jobtrak.com Index, which monitors job-posting data at U.S. colleges and universities, the most-posted job in 1999 was for "sales and marketing" ($35,288 average starting salary), followed by "accounting and finance" ($39,935, average starting salary). Third most-listed were openings in the computer and information science fields, ($48,155 average starting salary). Job openings in education shot up 173 percent, due in part to a shortage of qualified teachers - and, no doubt, Jobtrak.com's offer to post education jobs online for free.
