A lot of people have made a ton of money in the last few years, and they're giving a lot of it away. Since 1997, charitable giving has increased by more than $15 billion each year, according to The American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel (AAFRC) Trust for Philanthropy. Total giving in 1999 reached $190.16 billion, an 88 percent increase since 1990. We're increasingly becoming a nation of do-gooders. In 1995, philanthropy represented 1.7 percent of the gross domestic product; last year, it accounted for 2.1 percent. And giving as a percentage of personal income has grown as well, rising from 1.5 percent in 1995 to 1.8 percent in 1999. And now, the Internet is providing a whole new way to help unload some of that New Economy wealth - an estimated $2 billion was contributed via the medium last year.
