The number of women-owned firms in the United States has jumped 103 percent from 1987 to 1999, according to the National Foundation for Women Business Owners. Today there are 9.1 million women-owned companies, representing 38 percent of all businesses. Georgia, Arizona, and Washington are the fastest growing states for women-owned businesses. While the largest share of women-owned firms are in the service sector, the NFWBO finds that the greatest growth from 1992 to 1998 was in industries such as construction, whole trade, and agriculture.
