Lotteries and casinos are the most common forms of gambling today, according to a new survey from the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. Since the last national study in 1975, the proportion of adults who've played the lottery in the last year has more than doubled, to 52 percent. Roughly 29 percent of adults went to a casino in the last year, up from 10 percent in 1975. Overall gambling expenditures rose as well, from 0.30 percent of personal income in 1974 to 0.74 in 1997. Not everyone's a winner, though: bingo and horse-race betting lost patrons.
