A record 67.2 percent of all families owned a home in the second quarter of this year - the highest percentage in history, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The nation's home ownership rate has been rising steadily over the last few years. In 1999, it climbed to 66.8 percent, compared with 64 percent in 1993, and 45 percent in the 1940s. Home buying among minorities has also grown - although they still lag overall numbers.
