Arguably, nobody should know the sleep business better than a bed maker. Mattress manufacturer Kingsdown, which released a study on sleep and sleep deprivation in connection with its new Passion Sleep System, notes-naturally-that a mattress surface plays a critical role between chronic pain and movement during sleep.
Nights of tossing and turning have contributed to everything from auto accidents to events like the Exxon Valdez oil spill-so Kingsdown's sleep statistics might serve as a wake-up call to those who manage a staff of insomniacs. Let's hope the facts don't keep you up at night:
* Sleep deprivation is estimated to cost $150 billion a year in due to workplace accidents and reduced productivity (National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research).
* By the year 2010, an estimated 79 million Americans will have difficulty falling asleep (Census Bureau). Two-thirds of American adults report a sleep-related problem (National Sleep Foundation).
* Americans have reduced their average nightly sleep time by more than 20 percent over the past century (National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research).
* People who get six or less hours of sleep a night have a 70 percent higher mortality rate (California Department of Health). -T.M.
