Sure, those Victoria's Secret models can turn heads, but when it comes to buying bras, more women are hooked by the likes of Jaclyn Smith and a Blue Light Special. According to Port Washington, N.Y. -based market research firm The NPD Group, 39 percent of the 396 million bras sold last year were purchased at discount stores such as Kmart and Wal-Mart, and only 16 percent were sold at specialty stores like Victoria's Secret. A survey of 1,000 women released in August by NPD found that, on average, women purchase bras 3.4 times a year and buy an average of two bras each time they shop. More often than not, the bras they buy are “on sale� or offered as part of a “deal.� But bras are not impulse buys. NPD found that 3 in 4 women plan their bra purchases before visiting a store.
