Who says cocooning is out of style? Americans, it seems, like to hang out at home. According to a recent Harris Poll, 31 percent of Americans say their favorite leisure time activity is reading, up from 27 percent in 1999. They also like watching the boob tube (23 percent), spending time with their family (14 percent), and gardening (13 percent). Just 6 percent prefer to catch a flick — down from 8 percent in 1999 — and a mere 1 percent prefer eating out. Indeed, personal time seems to be at a premium: Americans only spend 20 hours each week on leisure activities, compared with 50 hours toiling at work.
