ABC is seizing on the recent string of celebrity divorces to promote one of its new fall shows -- maybe just not one that you would expect.
Miss Piggy took to Facebook on Tuesday to announce her split from long-time love Kermit the Frog, aping the standard Hollywood format (plus an an unusually explicit plug):
After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Kermit the Frog and moi have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on television ("The Muppets"/Tuesdays 8pm this fall on ABC) and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter… unless we get the right offer. Thank you for your understanding.
The social-media stunt, which trended on Twitter and quickly got more than 4,000 Facebook "likes," follows divorces among longtime couples including Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale and Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock.
At first glance it's perhaps an odd tone to strike for a show that parents may be thinking they'll watch with their kids. But this version of "The Muppets" is trying to present a more contemporary and adult take on the Jim Henson characters. If nothing else, it reminded people that the show is coming up.
