Started in a Vermont barn in 1977 by Jake Burton Carpenter, Burton has become the world's biggest and most recognizable snowboard brand. The swoosh of the slopes, so to speak. The company routinely teams with different artists and designers for its annual collections of boards, outerwear and accessories so it really should come as no surprise that it's latest such collaboration is with the Andy Warhol Foundation.
The 2008 limited edition collection features both immediately recognizable Warhol work such as the Campbell Soup cans and the banana that marked the Velvet Underground's debut, but also lesser known patterns, photography and illustrations, all incorporated into snowboards, boots, bindings, men's and women's outerwear, thermal wear and a travel bag collection.
"I thought working with works from a contemporary fine artist that there would have a lot of parameters," says Burton's senior vice president and creative director of product Greg Dacyshyn. "But they really told us to interpret his work however we felt appropriate. They encouraged us to mix and match colors and themes. While the group is very protective of the work – they live and breath it like we do snowboarding – once they saw what we were all about, they trusted us and even sent over board graphic ideas of their own."
With this archive you could do great board graphics for the next 20 years," says Dacyshyn. "The problem was figuring out what we didn't want to use, not choosing what we wanted. With access to the entire archive collection, there was no shortage of possibilities. We sat down with more than 10 different books of Warhol, some stuff popped right out, like the Last Supper, that were must-haves and then others, like when we looked through things like the photo booth collection and saw some shots of Edie Sedgewick, we'd just gravitate to."
