TOP OF THE LIST: Advertising and marketing lead the list of reasons companies are putting up Web sites. According to a recent survey of 253 U.S. manufacturing companies by Grant Thornton LLP, 65 percent said advertising and marketing purposes are important reasons to go on the Web, followed by 62 percent who cited "being perceived as a leader." Still, less than half said they expect the Internet to have much of an immediate effect on sales.
