This site debuted Feb. 29 as greenproducts- andtechnology.com, the online companion to the quarterly Green Products & Technology, which first appeared in January. On May 7, the site and magazine took on a new name, EcoHome, to tie them more closely to Hanley Wood's EcoHome Expo and Conference, which will be held for the first time this October in Austin.
The design of EcoHome Online echoes the earthy palette of the magazine and features a prominent green band at the top of every page within which the white-and-orange logo resides. The site features large, prominent photographs throughout, including a scrolling series of “editors' picks” in the left-hand top corner of the home page.
A library of videos will eventually be added, but EcoHome Online already offers multimedia content in the form of slide shows that illustrate particular stories. The site has a number of interactive features, such as polls and article comments; forums and blogs are on the drawing board to launch this year.
One typical Web 2.0 feature, most-read news, on this site is done differently than on most. It is not organized as a few headlines listed within a box. Instead, EcoHome Online presents the headlines of the most-read news followed by the first sentence or more of the story to entice visitors to read further.
Although EcoHome Online has not been up long enough for monthly unique visitors figures to be available, Omniture does report that the average visitor is spending 10 minutes on the site.
