Agere to cut 4,000 jobs, exit optical components

New York--Communications equipment maker Agere Systems Inc. on Wednesday said it would cut 4,000 jobs, or more than a third of its work force, and exit the optical components business. Agere, whose optical components are used in fiber-optic cable networks that transmit data at the speed of light, has been hammered along with the entire network gear market by the downturn in telecommunications.
