Florida Trend, Baton Rouge Business Report and Mainebiz took top honors in the Alliance of Area Business Publications' 2006 Alliance Editorial Excellence Awards.
Overall, there were 90 awards presented Saturday at the Alliance's annual summer conference in Little Rock, Ark. Thirty-one faculty members of the University of Missouri School of Journalism selected the winners from a pool of 680 entries.
Florida Trend was named Best Magazine. Baton Rouge Business Report was chosen as Best Newspaper in the large tabloid category and Mainebiz in the small tabloid category. Small tabloids are those with less than $1.5 million in annual revenue.
ColoradoBiz won the award for Best Cover, Magazine. Baton Rouge Business Report took home the Best Front Page, Newspaper award. NJBiz was named Most Improved Publication. Springfield Business Journal's sbj.net was named Best Web Site.
Indianapolis Business Journal won the most awards, with five gold, three silver and one bronze.
Florida Trend was the top winner among magazines, with three gold, two silver and two bronze.
"Once again, the judges were impressed by the quality of the work," Daryl Moen, a University of Missouri School of Journalism professor who coordinated the contest, said in a news release. “The best often appeared in the most competitive categories, but it also appeared in other categories. The design work is consistently strong in feature layouts, not as strong for magazine covers and newspaper fronts, except for the top tier."
