Alta Vista announces more layoffs, new CEO

Palo Alto, Calif.--Search engine Alta Vista Co., a majority-owned company of CMGI Inc., said it would cut 160 jobs, or about 30% of its work force, and shut down its Irvine, Calif. office. This is the third round of layoffs this year for the struggling company, which has cut nearly two-thirds of its entire work force in the past year. Alta Vista also named James Barnett as CEO. He was previously president of Inc., a media network for families.
