Producer comment: “The pet industry is very healthy,” said Andrew Darmohraj, senior VP of the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association and manager of the show. “Spending on pets has increased significantly. Entrepreneurs and established companies are seeing it's a good industry to come into, so we're seeing a lot of [first-time exhibitors].”
Exhibitor comment: “We were busier this year,” said Tim Boyd, VP-sales at Kurgo Products, a company that specializes in pet travel gear. “We have more new products. There were a lot more international buyers this year. It's [our] No. 1 show for international buyers.”
Breakdown: The event has more than doubled in size over the last 10 years as the pet industry has grown to become a $40 billion heavyweight. More than 100 first-time exhibitors signed onto the show this year; about 85% of those new booths represented start-up companies. Organizers launched a luxury pet-product showcase called the Boutique, which featured 150 booths. “We do a lot of research on the industry, and that's where a lot of the growth comes from,” Darmohraj said. —C.W.
