New York—American Express Co. and social network Foursquare are launching a nationwide service that will enable companies to serve couponless offers and discounts to potential customers, adding to the rapidly proliferating local deals landscape. (The program has been in beta since March.) Foursquare users who linked their accounts to their AmEx cards will be able to receive discounts from local businesses when they “check in” via Foursquare. American Express then applies the discount automatically, with no need for the customer to present a coupon at check-out. AmEx said it would provide reporting on transactions measuring the ROI of Foursquare-generated business, a process that could eventually enable companies to tailor offers based on customer purchasing histories.
