Dulles, Va.—America Online Wednesday announced it has acquired Mailblocks, a Los Altos, Calif.-based e-mail spam-blocking service. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Mailblocks is known in the e-mail industry for its development of ‘challenge-response’ technology to fight spam and authenticate legitimate e-mail senders.

“This will help members more effectively manage, protect and consolidate their e-mail—and gets us even closer to accomplishing our daily mission at AOL of increasing the amount of wanted, ‘good’ e-mail while eradicating the amount of unwanted, ‘bad’ e-mail in the inbox,” Roy Ben-Yoseph, director of e-mail products at AOL, said in a statement.

Mailblocks’ technology will be made available to AOL members and users of AOL Network services through a series of phased upgrades.
