As part of the agreement, the Aon logo will appear on the Manchester United uniform shirt for four years. Aon replaces the financially troubled insurer AIG as the principal sponsor of the world-famous soccer club.
“It’s the No. 1 team in the No.1 sport watched in the world,” said Phil Clement, global CMO of Aon. Clement said the global reach—especially in Asia—of the Manchester United brand was particularly appealing to Aon. “There are no sponsorship opportunities in the world [that work] the way this does,” he said.
In a conference call Wednesday, Aon CEO Greg Case declined to disclose financial terms of the deal, although various media outlets are reporting that the price tag for the four-year agreement is £80 million pounds, or about $132 million.
