Cupertino, Calif.—Apple Inc. has acquired social analytics company Topsy Labs. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Wall Street Journal reported the price was $200 million. Topsy, based in San Francisco, specializes in analyzing the “fire hose” stream of data on Twitter Inc., encompassing more than 500 million tweets daily, and produces reports on customer sentiment and product popularity. The Journal reported that the acquisition of Topsy could be useful to Apple in several of its services, including the iAd advertising platform for its iPhone and iPad mobile devices, as well as augmenting advertising options for online streaming radio station iTunes Radio.
