Apple mobile devices log email open advantage

New York—Apple Inc.'s iPhone is the most popular smartphone for checking email in the U.S., four times more than smartphones running Google Inc.'s Android operating system, according to a report from email marketing company Movable Inc. According to Movable's “U.S. Consumer Device Preference Report, Q2 2013,” Apple's iPhone accounted for 38.5% of email opens in the second quarter of the year. Android-powered smartphones accounted for 9.3% of all email opens in the quarter. However, Android smartphone users spend the most time viewing emails; 53% spend an average of 15 seconds or more viewing a message, compared with 41% of iPhone users. Movable's study was based on an analysis of the email campaigns of 100 companies in finance, media, retail, telecommunications and travel, conducted April through June.
