Atlantic Media’s Smith to head Bloomberg Media Group

New York—Justin B. Smith, president of Atlantic Media, has been named CEO of Bloomberg Media Group, effective Sept. 16. Andrew Lack, CEO of Bloomberg Media Group since 2008, will become chairman of the group. Smith served as president of the Atlantic Consumer Media division from 2007 to 2010, when he was promoted to president of parent Atlantic Media. He spearheaded the company’s transformation from largely printcentric to a digitally led, multiplatform enterprise. Under his leadership, Atlantic Media launched two digital-only, mobile-ready business media brands: Quartz, focused on international business, and Defense One, focused on national security. Bloomberg Media Group is a division of Bloomberg LP that includes the company’s television, radio, magazine, conferences and digital businesses. “Justin’s international experience, coupled with his leadership in growing media businesses across new and old platforms, shows that he is the ideal candidate to lead our Media Group,” said Bloomberg Chairman Peter T. Grauer, in a statement. There are no plans to replace Smith at Atlantic Media; current management will report directly to Chairman David Bradley. In a memo to company employees, Bradley wrote, “After reflection, I’ve decided that, rather than appoint a Justin successor, we will let the current leadership continue independent of any reporting structure—save to me—and grow to fill the empty spaces Justin’s departure leaves behind.”
