New York--B-to-b e-commerce in the U.S. totaled $306.12 billion in 2001 and is expected to reach $720.97 billion this year, according to eMarketer Inc.

That estimate does not include traditional EDI (electronic data interchange) transactions, but it does include Internet EDI.

E-commerce activity is highly concentrated in the manufacturing sector, with 68% of all shipments occurring in five industry groups--transportation equipment, computer and electronic products, chemicals, food products, and beverages and tobacco--according to eMarketer's analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau's Annual Survey of Manufacturers. In addition, eMarketer said, leading industry-backed b-to-b exchanges have recently begun to see an increase in members using their integrated e-commerce solutions.
