Robert Brai left his role as production director at Northstar Travel Media in June to help start a new outsourcing venture for the media industry. The new company is called Superior Media Solutions, and Brai is partner-COO. The company handles all aspects of print and digital production for its clients.
Media Business: In such a tough economy, what made you want to help start a new venture?
Brai: I had a life-threatening experi-ence last year and it changed my outlook on pursuing my dreams—in this case, being an entrepreneur and your own boss.
MB: So how did Superior come about?
Brai: There was a Booz Allen study in late 2008 that suggested publishers should focus on content creation, audience development and lead generation, and they should examine outsourcing production and other related operation functions. Bill Walker, our CEO, read the study, began assembling the team and looking for potential customers. Questex Media became our first customer.
MB: What makes Superior different?
Brai: Our outsourcing model is slightly different in that we believe it's important to retain some of the key operations people rather than off-shoring all the functions. We believe relationships and intimate product knowledge are crucial, and we want to minimize the risk for the CEO in making the decision to outsource. We also want to be a strategic partner with our customers and offer them managed solutions for paper and distribution as well. Technology and customer needs change quickly, and what's desirable today may be history tomorrow. Medium-to-small publishers can't afford to make capital investments in these technologies and get it wrong.
