Broadband market is expanding

Published on .

New York--Contrary to conventional wisdom, broadband access is growing at a more-than-100% clip, according to the recently released eMarketer report, "Broadband & Dial-up Access." The report indicates that broadband had more than 15 million subscribers in 2000 and more than doubled to 32.6 million at the end of 2001. “Countries such as Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, Sweden and Belgium have all experienced significant growth over the last twelve months,” said Ben Macklin, eMarketer's senior technology analyst. The report predicted that the broadband market will continue to expand, reaching 117 million worldwide in 2004. “Frankly, I don't know why commentators constantly complain about the lack of broadband adoption in the U.S.,” Macklin said. “The residential sector grew over 80% between 2000 and 2001. I'd characterize that as significant.”
