McLean, Va.—Gannett Co.'s USA Today has named David Callaway editor in chief. Currently the editor in chief of Dow Jones & Co.'s MarketWatch, Callaway, who will start his new role later this month, takes over the responsibilities of John Hillkirk, formerly executive editor, who stepped down to become senior editor for investigative journalism and enterprise reporting late last year. Susan Weiss, who served as interim executive editor, will remain in the role of executive editor-content. The announcement of Callaway's hiring was made by Larry Kramer, USA Today's president-publisher, who is also the founder of MarketWatch. Callaway is expected to boost the newspaper's forays into digital. “[Callaway's] expertise in both new and traditional media will be a tremendous asset as we transform our iconic brand into one that delivers unique content in new and creative ways,” Kramer said in a statement.
