Dallas—The trade show sector declined 4.0% in the first quarter compared with the same period last year, according to the CEIR Index.

Compiled by the Center for Exhibition Industry Research, the CEIR Index combines four metrics—net square feet, revenue, professional attendance and number of exhibiting companies—to measure the state of the industry.

The number of professional attendees declined 0.2% in the first quarter, less than both the 1.5% decrease in the first quarter of 2009 and the annual decrease of 4.1% last year. Net square feet of exhibit space fell 6.2% in the first quarter, compared with the year-earlier period. Revenue declined 8.4%., and the number of exhibiting companies dropped 1.0%.
